Waterlogging in pockets of Guwahati after 35.5mm rain
Guwahati: Several parts of the city were inundated after 35.5 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, disrupting daily life on Wednesday.Commuters reported difficulty moving through waterlogged roads in Noonmati, Rukmini Nagar, Chandmari and Satgaon, saying they were stranded after a few hours of rain and had to wade through knee-deep water amid poor drainage.Rabindra Nath, a resident of Kahilipara area, said, “The drains are frequently clogged with plastic products. There must be some accountability on the timing of the clean-ups carried out by the departments, as by the time they begin, the rain washes these back to the drain. If proper and timely action is taken, along with stricter monitoring and public awareness, the situation could improve significantly. People also need to take responsibility for their actions and avoid dumping waste indiscriminately, as this not only clogs the drainage system but also leads to waterlogging and health hazards for the entire locality. In Bamunimaidam, residents reported seeing a severed leg floating in floodwaters. Police said local shopkeepers spotted it and informed authorities. “We do not know about it, but we are looking into the matter,” a police officer from Chandmari Police Station said. The Assam govt said it has begun steps to position the state for the Government of India’s Urban Challenge Fund (UCF).
